A look back, a look forward

As you all know by now, the Seahawks had their season end at the hands of the Green Bay Packers this Sunday. I’ll admit, I was not very confident going in. 5 minutes into the game, the D was flying around the ball, creating 14 points off turnovers.

Then the proverbial shit hit the fan, and the ‘Hawks were stomped on both sides of the ball to the tune of a 42-20 rout, which actually makes the game seem closer than it was.

This season was full of ups and downs, triumphs and heartbreaks, and never short on excitement. Here’s a recap of what I learned, both for better and for worse. I’ll even throw in a fancy numbered list.

1. 50% of Seahawks fans sorely miss Steve Hutchinson, while the other half want him to die a painful death. Either way, two seasons removed from his abrupt departure, we can’t deny the impact he had on this team.

2. Matt Hasselbeck is a top 5 QB, and can shoulder the load on offense. Still, this offense is not designed to run on the passing game alone, and it certainly showed at times this season, particularly in the playoffs.

3. It’s time for Shaun Alexander to be kicked to the curb, but Maurice Morris is not the answer at running back. This is something I hope to discuss (statistically, of course) at greater length when I have the time. However, Leonard Weaver is the answer at fullback. He’s no Mack Strong, but his running and receiving skills add another dimension to the offense.

4. The Seahawks have one of the best linebacker groups in the league. With a couple of big DTs, this could be an extremely formidable run defense.

5. Long snappers apparently do matter.

6. Ryan Plackemeier has the weakest leg in the NFL.

7. D.J. Hackett is a glass monster. He’ll ball all over you if given the chance, but man does he ever get hurt a lot. I know high ankle sprains are tough to recover from, but this is the 2nd straight season he’s missed significant time with injuries. Get the man some vicodin or something.

8. Mike Holmgren looks more like Andy Reid every year.

9. People will still pick the Cardinals to win the division next year, for reasons I cannot comprehend.

10. Matt Hasselbeck does more advertisements than Peyton Manning. It’s starting to disgust me.

That’s all for now. Check back later this week for my offseason preview, links to mock drafts, and many more lame, sarcastic, not-particularly-witty observations.
